TWELVE

Raine Walsh

It took all of her strength to walk towards her office. That was the thing: it was her office. I will not feel threatened, she thought and straightened her shoulders. She would not allow Marcus to intimidate her or manipulate her, even if he himself was being manipulated by Lilly Everstein.

She had no doubt in her mind that Lilly was there to spy on her. Why else would a professor who had a teaching position at a very prestigious university want to work in a small practice halfway across the city? It just didn’t add up.

Arie graciously agreed to take Viona for the day. Even though Raine took her dog to the office sometimes, now was not the time—she needed as little distraction as possible.

She rushed through the front door and into her office, shut the door, then dropped her purse on her desk. She threw open the blinds, letting the sunlight pour into the room. When she turned, her office looked fresh and clean in the morning light. She turned back to the window and caught a glimpse of the back of Marcus’s head. Her heart lurched. He seemed to be waiting for someone.

She saw the blonde hair first. Lilly joined Marcus in the parking lot, and they began walking towards the office, smiling and laughing together. Anger flared inside her. They’re already ‘buddy-buddy’, huh? After a few days? He was angry because he couldn’t reach me, now he’s all fine and dandy? A few days ago, he couldn’t keep his hands off her. Maybe Lilly was giving him what he wanted. Satisfying his urges.

She was brought back to reality by the voices in the waiting room. For the moment, she’d almost forgotten why she’d come.

She sat down at her computer and pulled up her phone account. She sighed with relief—all her contacts and pictures were there. They had synced with her other devices. She didn’t lose anything but the phone itself. That was perfect. She just needed to sift through the contacts and find Brandon Perez’s address. She’d worked up herself enough to visit him, if only for closure, for both of them, she hoped.

The door to her office opened. She looked up.

Marcus stepped in, and when he saw her behind the desk, he acted like he’d just seen a ghost. “Oh...”

“Did you think I wouldn’t be at work?” She narrowed her eyes. Why would he come into my office if he thought I wasn’t here?

He backed up but lingered in the doorframe.

“You thought I would leave my clients hanging? They depend on me, Dr. Altor.”

Marcus looked down and shook his head, as though he was trying to hold something back. “Tell me about people that depend on each other, Raine.” His voice was husky; It hit her where it hurt.

But that was beyond the current problem. She had a serious question for him. “Why did you come into my office if you thought I wasn’t here?” she asked bluntly, trying to channel her little sister’s directness.

“I saw your curtains were open from outside.
